Amy Kaufman, Recent Work

  • Traywick Contemporary 895 Colusa Avenue Berkeley, California, 94707 United States (map)

Amy Kaufman finds inspiration in unexpected places, from street repairs and tire treads to art history and her own earlier work. She transforms these observations into compositions built from repeated lines, shapes, patterns and color, balancing careful planning with the irregularities and surprises that happen in the process of making.

The new work ranges from intricate, restrained compositions to paintings with a more expansive and assertive use of color. Familiar forms and ideas from Kaufman’s decades-long practice are revisited and pushed in new directions. An unexpected group of sculptures made from found and leftover wood carries her approach into three dimensions, using painted surfaces, raw wood and irregular shapes.

Traywick Contemporary is open by appointment only, Thursday–Saturday, 11am–5pm. Visitors are welcome to schedule a viewing at calendly.com/traywick-contemporary.
