Mark S. Thomas is an Oakland, California based contemporary abstract artist with an extensive background in art and commercial design.  Mark currently creates acrylic and oil paintings for a series titled "Collaborating with Chaos" involving abstract Pareidolic imagery. 

COLLABORATING WITH CHAOS  - (Artist Statement) 

My work is primarily driven by my love of color and abstract organic pattern. I create acrylic and mixed media abstract paintings on canvas, wood panel or paper in my Oakland California studio.  I'm obsessed with observing color relationships and the ways in which color can effect ones mood and well-being. 

I like to allow the paint and random pattern to prompt and propel me throughout the compositional development of my work, intermingling chance and deliberate mark-making sporadically throughout the painting process.  I'm always searching for a balance between spontaneity and careful editing, in an effort to repicate the variability of repetition found within natural and biological patterns.  I love working in layers and using unconventional tools to paint with, anything from combs to rolling pins, to handmade tools.  Paint brushes are frequently the last tools I use to finish my paintings.
