RGC is excited to welcome Belgian artist David Deweerdt to the gallery for his first solo exhibition.

Deweerdt’s work centers on the human being: body, soul, and emotion, using figures as mediums to communicate visceral states. Sometimes dark and turbulent, always fascinating, his figures function less as literal subjects than as conduits shaped to produce an immediate sensation, challenging the viewer.

Through years of painting physical difference and deformity, he confronts Western aesthetic norms. With his singular technique, Deweerdt paints roiling, obscured naked forms as containers for primitive fears and fantasies, rendered as simultaneously alluring and repulsive, questioning ideas of sensuality, embodiment, and conventional beauty.
