ISABELLA KIRKLAND: Critters

  • Hosfelt Gallery 260 Utah Street San Francisco, California, 94103 United States (map)

The (very different) art–making practices of Patricia Piccinini and Isabella Kirkland each center on science and the natural world, as well as the social, environmental, and moral issues of the Anthropocene. For these installations, each artist swerves away from the work she is known for, in the belief that pleasure is a prescription for healing.

The other half of the gallery will be aswarm with Isabella Kirkland's creatures — Formicinae, Trochilidae, Araneae, Dasypus, Murinae, Lacertilia (ants, hummingbirds, spiders, armadillos, mice/rats, lizards) and various Mammalia — all sculpted from organic materials (seeds, twigs, pods, leaves, etc.) that she collects while on her daily walks. Ingenious and charming, they're guaranteed to surprise, captivate, and delight.

Hosfelt Gallery will be closed from August 18th through September 7th. We will reopen on September 8th with two solo exhibitions — Stefan Kürten: Echoes from the Past and Sarah Newton: Bay Trail Interruptions.
