Jim Melchert: Where The Boundaries Are, is both a retrospective exhibition and a book. They are long overdue tributes to one of America’s great artists. The exhibit will open at @dirosaart on October 18, 2025, at their San Francisco location.

Melchert challenged ceramic traditions and helped elevate the medium’s acceptance into mainstream contemporary sculpture. It documents the artist’s involvement in the California Funk movement, his groundbreaking 1970s performances, his work in conceptual art, and showcases the thrilling broken tile works that preoccupied the artist at the end of his long career.

The book and exhibition are the result of a year and a half of work by artist and Gallery16 founder Griff Williams, who was a friend of the late artist. @williamsgriff
