Ever since childhood, artists Cecilia Lusven and Bussie Parker Kehoe have had to resist the urge to touch everything they see. That impulse now sits at the core of their practices.
MAG Galleries is thrilled to present the work of these two dynamic artists: returning artist Bussie Parker Kehoe and Céclia Lusven, who is exhibiting with us for the first time. Their works exude wonder and attention to detail, celebrating skilled labor and the fragility of the natural environment. The unique techniques used by each artist foster a sense of wonderment, while their use of recycled materials highlights their distinct viewpoints.
Céclia Lusven uses a loom to weave strips of recycled leather or rubber into colorful abstract compositions inspired by nature. Her work challenges the industrial trivialization of textile practices by elevating discarded materials. As Lusven explains, "Each piece is a testament to the laborious process... revealing the journey of each thread." By utilizing the loom to weave pieces of upcycled materials, she brings awareness to the dedication and intricacy at the heart of weaving.
Bussie Parker Kehoe utilizes discs of recycled house paint to create intricate views of a personal narrative. Committed to celebrating found materials in unexpected ways, she assembles paint peels into "quilts" reminiscent of traditional Korean textiles or coaxes them into organic patterns. Kehoe notes, "Chaos and order are inherent in this process. It reflects life, where you take what life throws at you and try to make sense of it.”
Working with simple, overlooked materials, both artists test the limits of their mediums, pushing them to unexpected ends. Their works are tactile and sculptural, inviting contact, yet are accompanied by the familiar warning: “please don’t touch.”
