SF Art Events: Week of 09.14.25
Andrea Carlson, The Buffet, 2025, Sumi ink and gouache on paper
THING ONE: Andrea Carlson: The Lasting
Ongoing - October 25th
Titled “The Lasting,” Carlson’s solo show comprises two monumental paintings, eight smaller paintings on paper, and one sculpture. Carlson’s title plays on historian Jean M. O’Brien’s important book Firsting and Lasting, which examines how American local histories celebrated the arrivals and founding “firsts” of European settlers while lamenting the disappearance of the original inhabitants—even though Natives still lived in the very towns being chronicled. Indigenous people were memorialized as “lasts” in the manner of “The Last of the Mohicans,” spreading the myth of “Native extinction”—a myth that persists in many American minds to this day. However, through a conceptual twist, Carlson transforms these last-of-their-kind stories into narratives of long-lasting resilience, honoring the survival and ongoing adaptability of Native people.

Thing two: La Raíz
ONGOING - October 30th
La Raíz is a celebration of Latine identity in the U.S., spotlighting artists who honor their roots while expanding the conversation around what it means to be Latine today. Whether it’s through intricate weaving techniques passed down from Bolivian cholitas, or through the lens of first and second-generation Latine artists navigating their identity in the U.S., the show highlights the range of lived experiences, creative expression, and personal histories that shape Latine identity today.
The pieces in La Raíz explore themes like heritage, reclamation, and personal history—each artist offering their own voice and lived experience. Together, their work paints a vivid picture of what it means to stay rooted while continuing to grow and evolve, both individually and as a community.
The show brings together five Bay Area artists. Victor Reyes, Héctor Muñoz-Guzmán, Esteban Raheem Abdul Raheem Samayoa, Fernanda Martinez, and Miguel Arzabe
