SF Art Events: Week of 11.09.25
THING ONE: ADAM CALDWELL : COVERAGE
November 15 - December 20, 2025
Ryan Graff Contemporary welcomes San Francisco artist Adam Caldwell for his first exhibition with the gallery.
Presented as an imperfect yet urgent response, this body of work arises from an acute concern about the cultural and political trajectory of the United States.
Activism. Environmentalism. Ethnicity. Inclusion. Minority. Refugee.
Each piece begins with a single word that has been removed from U.S. federal websites, using that erasure as a conceptual seed. Through layered mark-making and visual reconstruction, Caldwell’s images give form to what is being suppressed, offering a deeply personal and politically attuned meditation on resistance.
In conjunction with this exhibition, the gallery will be releasing a unique graphic novel interpretation of the show.
LOCATION: Ryan Graff Gallery. 804 Sutter Street | San Francisco, CA (map)

THING TWO: Art talk - How to Look at Art in the Post-Pollock Decades
Cat, Bird, Puppet by Mark Symczak
Thursday, November 13th at 6pm
Presented by Rob Delamater, Co-Founder of Lost Art Salon
After the early 1950s, abstract art fractured into a range of dynamic directions—Hard-Edge Painting, Color Field, Abstracted Figuration, Urban Muralism, Graffiti, and a continued evolution ofAbstract Expressionism. While these genres now fill the walls of institutions like MoMA, they can still feel distant or difficult to interpret for many viewers.
In this ArtTalk, we’ll explore the motivations behind these artistic shifts and offer accessible tools to help you better understand and appreciate these bold, often challenging works. We'll spotlight influential artists such as Joan Mitchell, Alice Neel, Philip Guston, Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Hockney, Ellsworth Kelly, Gerhard Richter, and more.
That evening, we’ll also debut the work and legacy of four historic “Masters of Abstraction” whose careers reflect these post-Pollock developments in compelling and diverse ways:
Leigh Hyams (1926–2013)
J. Cook (1935–2022)
Mark Symczak (1954–2015)
Joseph DiStefano (1940–2020)
Join for an evening of discovery, insight, and conversation as we reconnect with the richness and relevance of abstract/ed art in the second half of the 20th Century.
