Chris McCaw: Reversals and Revolutions

  • Haines Gallery 2 Marina Boulevard San Francisco, CA, 94123 United States (map)

January 21 - March 7, 2026

Chris McCaw: Reversals and Revolutions, our second solo exhibition with the renowned Bay Area photographer. Opening during SF Art Week in January 2026, this highly anticipated exhibition is McCaw's first solo showing in San Francisco in nearly a decade.

Chris McCaw: Reversals and Revolutions is on view from January 21 - March 7, 2026, with an opening reception on Friday, January 23, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM.

McCaw's artistic practice is singular, experimental, and decidedly analog, foregrounding photography's essential components—light and time, lenses and light-sensitive materials—to generate startlingly inventive photographic forms. He is perhaps best known for his iconic Sunburn works, in which hand-built cameras harness the power of the sun, allowing it to literally burn its own path on light-sensitive photo paper.

Reversals and Revolutions features a selection of technically ambitious, multi-panel Sunburn pieces alongside new works from his latest body of work, Inverse. Expanding upon the analog tools and techniques that McCaw has developed over two decades, Inverse centers on the process of in-camera solarization—a tonal reversal between negative and positive, caused by overexposure and achieved only through analog means. Using handmade cameras, McCaw utilizes this complex photographic process to compose tonally bifurcated landscapes that disrupt our visual and emotional expectations.
