SF Art Events: Week of 1.04.26
THING ONE: Manet & Morisot
October 11, 2025 – March 1, 2026
This is the first major exhibition dedicated to the artistic exchange between French Impressionists Édouard Manet (1832–1883) and Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). Manet was the era’s great pioneer of modern painting, and Morisot, the only woman to exhibit under her own name in the original Impressionist group. Spanning 15 years (1868–1883), this exhibition chronicles the development of a friendship between two pioneering artists. The story of their relationship has often been told through Manet’s early portraits of Morisot, with Morisot’s own work treated as an offshoot of Manet’s. Recent scholarship reveals that, by the final years of his life, Manet increasingly followed Morisot’s example — her choice of subjects and colors, and even her rapid, fluttering brushstrokes. Rich in new research, the exhibition recasts this celebrated artistic friendship — and, by extension, the story of modern art — in a fresh light.

Maybaum Gallery is proud to inaugurate their 2026 programming with a solo exhibition by Bay Area artist Ian Micheal. Born in Detroit in 1985 and lauded for his warm vignettes that leave room for interpretations of gender, emotion, storyline, and kinship, Micheal’s examples tender moments across large-scale canvases, often employing soft color palettes and layers of patterning over simple backgrounds. Offering viewers a personal connection to the work and emphasizing the vibrancy of often-marginalized individuals, Micheal has exhibited his paintings internationally from Seoul to New York City, Mexico City to Los Angeles, and Vancouver to Miami. Maybaum Gallery is thrilled to bring his work to San Francisco for its premiere, and very much looks forward to welcoming the artist to the exhibition's opening reception on Saturday, January 17th, from 3-5 pm (at the launch of SF Art Week). Maybaum Gallery was founded in 2018 by Christina Maybaum. The gallery represents emerging and mid-career artists with a focus on process-driven work that reveals the artist's hand. Located in downtown San Francisco, the gallery’s space comprises 2,000 square feet of exhibition space with solo shows at the 49 Geary Street gallery as well as a 20,000 square foot exhibition space for the gallery's growing roster of artists at 48 Stockton Street. In addition to rotating exhibitions, the gallery provides private art consulting services to meet clients' unique art needs.
